We’re making this Friday more frightening with writer/director Stephen Cognetti’s director’s cut of his 2015 found footage horror film Hell House LLC . Now, don’t let the found footage description scare you off too early. While many movies done in this style can be quite underwhelming, this is one that is actually well-crafted, intriguing, and frequently effectively creepy.

Hell House LLC tells the following story:

Five years after an unexplained malfunction causes the death of 15 tour-goers and staff on the opening night of a Halloween haunted house tour at the long-abandoned Abbadon Hotel, a documentary crew travels back to the scene of the tragedy to find out what really happened.

The film stars Ryan Jennifer, Danny Bellini, Gore Abrams, Jared Hacker, Adam Schneider, Alice Bahlke, Phil Hess, Lauren A. Kennedy, and Jeb Kreager… Yes, I’m sorry to break the found footage illusion, but those are actors on the screen, the tragedy at the Abaddon Hotel didn’t actually happen. Although with names like “Gore”, “Hacker”, and “Jeb Kreager” these actors’ names sound more made-up than their characters’.

Hell House LLC is a movie you can learn several lessons from, so let’s run through some of them. First and foremost, this movie teaches us that it’s not a good idea to open a haunted house attraction in a hotel named after a demon, a hotel that also happens to be located in a town named after a demon. Second: when the inanimate mannequins wearing clown masks start moving in ways that shouldn’t be possible, don’t stick around beyond the first night that happens. Third: bed sheets won’t protect you from evil spirits. And lesson number four is wisdom that horror movies have been trying to impart on us for years now: don’t look in the basement, and stay out of the attic!

Haunted house attractions are a great part of any Halloween season, so the decision to make a found footage movie set around the creation of one of those attractions – and to feature footage from a tour through the location that goes terribly wrong – was a very clever one. Even if you can’t stand the average found footage movie, you might enjoy this one. So give Hell House LLC a chance. After all, it’s free!
